United States of America

The United States of America or United States, popularly referred to as the United States or as America, a federal republic on the continent of North America, consisting of 48 contiguous states and the non-contiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii. Outlying areas include Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.

The conterminous 48 states are bounded on the north by Canada, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The northern boundary is partly formed by the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence River; the southern boundary is partly formed by the Rio Grande. New York is the largest city in the United States. Washington, D.C., is the capital.

It has mountains to match anything in Europe, beaches to rival Spain and Portugal, blue seas as good as Turkey and Greece and a wealth of sunshine.

Florida has two very different coasts. The Eastern shore is the Atlantic which has bigger waves that suit the surfers, but the beaches are long wide and child friendly.

Major resort areas on this side of Florida are Daytona Beach, Palm Beach, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Over on the west coast of the 'Sushine State' is nthe more calmer Gilf of Mexico where the blue waters are a paradise for watersports and superb beaches can be found at Naples, Sarasota, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Sanibel and Capitva.

Califonia's Pacific coastline runs hundredsof miles from San Diego to the north of San Francisco and there are scores of resort areas such as Monterey, Carmel, Malibu, Laguna and Newport.

The Golden state is the biggest, and has such diversity attractions which are natural e.g. Death Valley, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park asnd the Sierra Nevada montains and also manmade e.g. two Disneyland theme parks in Arnaheim and Universal Studios Hollywood.

New England has six states, Vermount, Masschuesettess, Maine, Rhoder Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire, all of whicg offer winter sports, white water rafting, hiking and mountain biking. This area is a miriad of colour in the autum when the leaves change colour.

Virginia was at the heart of the Civil War and has preserved much of the history. Washington DC is close by, as is the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

Cities with some of the best shopping are Miami, New York, Dallas and Chicago.

The United States of America's climate is wide ranging. Florida enjoys almost all year round sunshine, whilst California varies from a sunny south to heavy snow in the mountains. New England enjoys warm springs and summers but winters bring heavy snows.

The southern states are generally warmer all year round with humidity high in the south east but the south nwestern states of Arizona and Texas have a dry, hot climate.
