Thailand Thailand

Thailand, formerly Siam, is situated in South East Asia, and is bordered by Myanmar (Burma) to the north and west, by Laos to the north-east, by Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand (Siam) to the south-east, by Malaysia to the south, and by the Andaman Sea to the south-west.

Throughtout Thailand there is a great variethy and rurual life can be explored in the northern hill region. Somewhere coolerthan the south, the north is thickly forested and many tribes are distinguished by their different coloured clothes. Adventure seekers can trek into the teak forests to watch elephants at work, explore magnificent temples or go on elephant safaris. In this region lies the City of Chiang Mai, Thailand's second largest forest.

Bangkok combined the two unlikely combinations of both mordern and historic. Once dubbed the Venice of the East due to the number of rivers that crossed it. Travellers do not have to travel far to see the houses on stilts which are typical of Thailand and floating markets in which vendors sell from their boats.

Thailand is a Buddist country with a monarchy. The main spots in Bangkok are the temples of Wat Arun, Wat Benchamabophit, and the Grand Palace of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. The main river is the Chao Phraya. One of the many tourist attractions is the ruins of the ancient capital Ayutthata.

The most popular beaches in Thailand are spread around the country. The nearest to Bangkok down the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand is Pattaya.

Situated on the western coast of the Gulf lies Hua Hin, which was once havoured as a holiday sport by the Thai royalty.

On the Andaman Sea coast is the island of Phuket, one of the most famous resorts in Thailand. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway, but has all the facilities with which to enjoy a tropical holiday : - kayaking, sailing, fishing, diving and snorkelling.

Thailand has a moist, tropical climate, influenced chiefly by monsoon winds that vary in direction according to the season. From April to October the winds are mainly from the south-west and are moisture laden; during the rest of the year they blow from the north-east. Temperatures are higher, ranging from 25.6° to 36.7° C (78° to 98° F), while the country is under the influence of the south-west winds. During the remainder of the year the range is from 13.3° to 33.3° C (56° to 92° F). Temperatures are somewhat higher inland than they are along the coast, except at points of great elevation.

Annual rainfall is about 1,525 mm (60 in) in the northern, western, and central regions, 2,540 mm (100 in) or more on the Thai portion of the Malay Peninsula, and 1,270 mm (50 in) or less on the Khorat Plateau. Most rain falls from June to October.
