France France

France, in western Europe, is bounded on the north by the English Channel, the Strait of Dover, and the North Sea, on the north-east by Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, on the east by Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, on the south-east by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by Spain, and on the west by the Bay of Biscay. The republic of France includes ten overseas possessions. These include the overseas departments of French Guiana, in South America; Martinique and Guadeloupe, in the Caribbean; and Réunion, in the Indian Ocean. Territorial collectivities and dependencies include St Pierre and Miquelon, Mayotte, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, the French Southern and Antarctic Territories, and Wallis and Futuna Islands.

The sunny south of Provence and Cote d'Azur combine sun and snow and are among the most popular of France's regions. The beaches of Antibes, Cannes, Nice and Juan les Pins are the playgrounds of the rich and famous.

Aquitaine's top resorts, Biarritz and Bayonne, share the general year round warmth that the Mediterranean France offers along with diving, snorkling, sailing and at chic Biarritz, surfing.

Popular wine destinations can be found in the Loire Valley, Burgundy etc.

On the Atlantic coast Brittany is rugged and rocky but interspersed with fine beaches, such as Val Andre, Etables, St Quay and Perros-Guirec.

On the Normandy coast there are mainly inllets and coves to explore the best known being Mont Saint Michael with its impressive fortress out in the bay. Commemorating Normandy's war past are the Bayeux Musem wit its Battle of Hastings tapestry and the musems at Arromanches and Caen commemorating the D-Day Landings.

Sights such as Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, the Louvre gallery and the River Seine have made Paris the most visited European capital. The city now boasts something for everyone including Disneyland Paris and many local markets.

French cuisine is revered worldwide and travellers through France can sample many tasty regional variations with some of the world's best known wines. But one of the great treats is to join the cafe society, adopt the relaxed Gallic way, and with a coffee, good food or fine wine in front of you, watch life go by from the pavement cafes.
