Lanzarote Lanzarote

Lanzarote lies 100 km off the coast of Africa and has an average year round temperature of 22 c. It's landscape appears more lunar than anything you will find on earth, with over 300 volcanoes whose activity over thousands of years have shaped the landscape of this unique island.

The landsape is therefore extremely rare, and as a result the island was declared a Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO in 1994. The mosr active volcano in Lanzarote is Timanfaya, The Fire Mountain. This has still active craters with the last major eruption taking place at the beginning of the 19 th century. The spectacular display of natural phenomena is now preserved as Timanfaya National Park.

Another feature of Lanzarote's incredible geology is 'La Cueva de Los Verdes' ( Green Caves). These are the longest volcanic tunnels in the world, and connect Monte Corona with the sea. They apear magical in their optlical illusions, producing wonderful colours and giving the appearance of a huge abyss, which is in fact a small water pool. These fascinating labyrinth caves were omce used to hide raiding pirates, but today houses rare species such as the white lobster.

Many of the beaches in Lanzarote have black volcanic sand. One of the mosr unusual costal features on the islands is ' El Golfo' a large seawater lagoon where the water glows a bright green colour. The semi-precious stone 'Olivine' is found here which is used to make jewellry. If you head south to Punta de Papagayo, which is the southern most tip of Lanzarote, you will find several small bays and coves with crystal clear waters and fine white sands.

Cesar Manrique, the world renowned artist, sculptor, architect and enviromentalist desined seven centres of art and culture on Lanzarote. Amongst these are the International Musem of Contemporary Art, that holds exhibits from amongst others, Picasso, Bacon, Klee, Leparc, and Manrique, and also the cactus garden in Guatiza vullage on the east coast of the island. Created out of a stone quarry that had lay abandoned for over 150 years, the gardens now contain 10,000 cacti of over 1,100 different varieties.
