Barbados, independent state, the most easterly of the Caribbean islands, lying to the east of St Vincent in the Windward Islands and bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The island gained its independence from the United Kingdom on November 30, 1966. The island has a total area of 430 sq km (166 sq mi) and has a maximum length of 34 km (21 mi) and a maximum width of 23 km (14 mi). The capital, major city, and chief port is Bridgetown, located on the south-western coast.

Barbados is generally flat along the coast and hilly in the interior. Mount Hillaby, in the north, is the highest point, rising to 340 m (1,115 ft). Geologically it is very different from its nearest neighbours. The Windward Islands are volcanic in origin, but Barbados is formed from coral limestone, underlain by sedimentary rock. The limestone structure means that the island has hardly any rivers and little other surface water. Deep gullies cut in the limestone channel rainwater down to the coast and there are underground water reserves. Other limestone features are the several cave systems, with stalactites and stalagmites. The western coast is well endowed with sandy beaches, the eastern coast more rugged. Barbados has no natural deep-water harbours and is largely surrounded by coral reefs.

The climate is tropical, tempered by sea breezes. The mean annual temperature is about 26° C (79° F). A rainy season prevails from June to December; average annual rainfall varies from 1,000 mm (40 in) on the coast to 2,300 mm (90 in) on the interior uplands. There is a small risk of tropical storms and hurricanes between July and November.
